The Cone of Shame
Jul. 3rd, 2023 06:10 pmI had intended to get a great many things done today, but that was really an exercise in optimism. Pretty much only *one* thing got accomplished today, but it was very important.
We took Ruby the Dog in for surgery.
Apparently, she had developed a mast cell tumor on her flank. It wasn't growing very quickly, but it had clearly become a problem and needed to go. The good news was the the surgery went quite well. We'll have to wait for the pathology report to come back, but everything that was obvious was removed with substantial margins, so we are keeping our fingers crossed.
In the meantime, Ruby has a big shaved incision that has been stitched up and needs to be left alone. This calls for the Cone of Shame. Ruby, like most dogs, is not happy at all about this. We removed the cone for a bit earlier to give her a fighting chance of eating, but she's really not so much interested in food right now, although she did happily take the liver sausage that contained the mass of pills that she needs to be taking. And she didn't really seem to want to bother the incision -- I'm not sure she can constructively *reach* it -- but let's not find out the hard way that she can.
The one thing that is certain is that Ruby is not going to enjoy wearing the Cone of Shame for the next few weeks. We'll see how everything else goes.
