We crawled out of bed late this morning. By the time we both got through the bathroom, it was nearly noon. After some negotiation, Gretchen and I went over to the Portillo's in Niles for lunch. It was much less crowded there than I'd expected, although more of a crowd developed a bit later. On the way back, I picked up gas at Sam's Club, which was also uncrowded and then headed in to relax for a few minutes before getting to work on various things that I had planned.

I flipped on the TV, figuring I'd watch the end of a home improvement show that I had started watching and had to leave during. But the TV came on to a local channel and I discovered that some lunatic had shot a lot of people at the Highland Park parade. Following the news (such as it was) occupied most of the afternoon.

We had thought to go to the Mount Prospect fireworks tonight, but they were understandably canceled. Given the weather, I am not too unhappy to be at home.

The "person of interest" in the crime has been apprehended. We'll see if and when charges are filed.

In the meantime, I am terribly sick of talking heads on the news who talk about this and that and what we should do.

I remember the 4th of July parades in Mount Prospect in the 60s. They went right down the street my grandmother lived on. I lived there as a kid, went to kindergarten through part of 6th grade. I recall I even marched in one of them as a little kid. IIRC we used to go to a park to watch the fireworks.

Happy 4th of July.
